why yellow house?
The Yellow House is both the physical nature of the studio, but also a nod to Vincent Van Gogh’s painting ‘Yellow House.’ In 1888, Vincent van Gogh rented a house painted yellow in Arles, France. His desire for an artistic community guided him to create space where artists could live and work together. Though fraught with tension, he spent two months at the yellow house painting side by side with Paul Gauguin. Our Yellow House serves to carry out the intention and hopes of that art community long ago.
Van Gogh was one of Abi’s first beloved artists, when she discovered a love for art in highschool. It was not only for his signature impressionistic textures and movement, but for the passion and struggles that he as an artist and individual experienced with mental illness. In this regard, Yellow House Art Studio will be a welcoming space for all artists, wherever their journey has been. It signifies the honoring of mental health and creating a tangential space for healing and process.
